Anger over Orange hall attack

An arson attack has been carried out on an Orange hall in Newcastle that its members say is subjected to sectarian attacks on an almost weekly basis.

A police spokesman said a window was broken at the building on Causeway Road and a fire was set in the main hall causing minor smoke damage. The fire did not catch and burnt itself out.

The attack took place sometime between 10pm on Wednesday, May 20 and 1pm on Tuesday, May 26, police said.

A spokesman for the Newcastle Temperance LOL 357 said that band members who arrived to practice on Tuesday night found that a grill had been removed from an upstairs window and a pane of glass broken.

"Investigation in the main hall identified that flammable liquid had been poured through the broken glass and set a curtain on fire," he said.

"This resulted in the curtain being completely destroyed and the wall being scorched. However, the fire did not take hold and went out probably because of the fire resistant nature of the curtain fabric. The interior of the hall also had some smoke damage,"

He said the officers and members are disappointed with the attack "which, alas, is far from the first".

"The hall is subjected to regular weekend attacks by bottle throwers and in the last decade it has had major internal damage with banners, band instruments and furnishings destroyed by fire," said the spokesman.

"Some years later our Orange arch was destroyed by fire inside the grounds of the hall and over a year ago a member of the local Sinn Fein group fell from the roof of the hall in the early hours of the morning and was treated in hospital for his injuries."

The hall was substantially renovated last year and is used by a number of lodges and groups on a weekly basis as well as being the base for Sunday School trips bringing much needed revenue to the traders in the town, he said.

"Our small lodge, which has been in existence in the town since 1798, is determined to continue despite the intimidation it is being subjected to," said the spokesman. 28th May 2009 News Letter
