LOL 172 St Saviour's True Blues, Clonroot
 
 
No 172 was first established at Canoneil in 1796 with George Morrow as Master. He was succeeded in 1814 by Richard Brownlee, the latter being followed in 1820 by Thomas Brownlee. In the following year Arthur Brownlee was in the chair. During these years the Number had been meeting in Artabracka, and in 1825 James Harrison is Master. The latter was succeeded in 1828 by John Dickson, but in 1832 we find it in Mullahead, with James Harrison in the chair.

He was followed in 1846 by William Brownlee. In 1848 it was meeting in Portadown with Daniel Bulla as Master, while in 1850 the warrant was entrusted to William Atkinson.

From 1850 until 1854, the Number was dormant. In the latter year the warrant was given to Daniel Chapman, Drumnahuncheon, but in the following January it is again reported to be ‘not working.’ It is however, meeting in January, 1856, with Daniel Chapman in the chair, and Robert Donaldson, secretary. The WM for 1857-64 was Jas Cummings, John Hewitt being DM; and William Jenkinson, secretary. After another break of a year, we find Thomas Cooper Master 1866-7. James Cummings is again Master in 1868-9, with William Pearson as DM.

We first find St Saviour’s True Blues mentioned in July 1869, when new rules were formulated for No 1238 (which see), of which Rev C King-Irwin was founder and first WM, with David McClelland, DM; John Ruddell, secretary; Rev A Irwin, treasurer. The committee was – C Anderson, J Kinney, G Robinson, W Hewitt, and Rev J Paton. Revs A Irwin, junior, J Finlay, and J Jones were also members, and Rev Lorenzo Shepherd seems to have been proposed as a member. John R Logan was admitted from No 81.

In October 1869, it was reported that ‘James Cummins, late Master of 172, now suspended was desirous of transferring his warrant to that lodge,’ and the lodge secured the warrant of No 172 in 1870, the following being officers for the next three years :- WM, Rev C King-Irwin; DM, D McClelland; Chaplain, Rev James Paton; secretary, Robert Bailie; treasurer, Rev A Irwin. Revs Low . Shepherd, and Moutray were visitors at meeting on November 7th, 1870.

In 1874, John R Logan was elected Master, and held the position until 1876, James Anderson, George Anderson, and James Courtney being DM’s. Archibald Courtney was Chaplain; Alex B Logan, secretary; and John Cummings and John Breen treasurers.

The last named became Master in 1877 with George Ruddock, DM; Henry Gilpin, secretary; and Singleton Cranston, treasurer. In 1879 George Ruddell succeeded to the chair, John Breen occupying the vice chair, and Alex Brann became treasurer. It was then meeting at Vinecash.

Henry Gilpin, who had been secretary, was Master in 1882-3; William Pearson being secretary and James Hayes becoming treasurer.

James Callaghan was Master in 1885, being succeeded in the following year by James Anderson, William John Haire becoming DM.

In 1891 Alex Lappin and Alfred Haire were respectively WM and DM, being succeeded in their respective positions in the following year by Robert Cummings and Joseph Holmes.

In 1895 Henry Gilpin, who had been chaplain for some years, became Master, and Thomas McBroom became DM.

Joseph Holmes, who was elected Master in 1896, held the office until 1902. John Callaghan became DM, being succeeded in 1899 by Henry Pearson. In 1900 James McBroom became DM, a position which he held until he succeeded to the chair in 1903. He occupied the chair until 1924, when James Pearson was Master. David Holmes held the office for the next two years, followed in 1928 by Robert Jennings. James McBroom again became Master in 1929 and still holds the position (1935).

Deputy Masters during the last 30 years have been :- James Callaghan, David Holmes, Thomas Buckley, William Pearson, Wesley Breen, Samuel Lamb, Henry Pearson (1916-18), David Lamb (1919-22) John Ferguson, Isaac Hayes, R Jennings, Stewart Woodhouse, and William Courtney, who holds the office at present (1935).

Secretaries were – Thomas Buckley, Robert George Loney, Joseph Callaghan, Wesley Breen, John Hayes (1913-18) Alfred Callaghan (1919-23) John Callaghan, Alfred Pearson, William Courtney, William J Stewart, and Herbert McBroom, the present holder of the position.

Treasurers – David Holmes, Robert John Hewitt (1907-11) Joseph Hall (1913-15), William H Watson (1916-18) William Holmes (1919-20) W H Watson (1921), Joseph Holmes (1922-3) Samuel Lamb (1924-5) Alfred Pearson, Joseph Holmes, Thomas Magowan, Joseph Black, Fred Pearson, David Lamb (1930-33) and Stewart Woodhouse (1934-5).

In September 1896 W J Locke (District Master) W H Wright (DDM) David Moore (DT) Joseph Holmes WM of 172 and John Callaghan DM, became trustees of Clonroot Orange Hall, which was erected in 1884.

Two members of the Lodge – Thomas Hayes and Joseph Holmes – have each considerably over half a century’s membership in the Lodge.

Rev C K Irwin, junior, St Saviour’s a member of 172 was a DG Chaplain of Ireland in 1872.

The principle officers for 1936 were - James McBroom, Drumnahuncheon; William Courtney, Coronation street, Portadown; Herbert H McBroom, Drumanhuncheon; Stewart Woodhouse, Derrinraw.

The lodge's current banner, featuring a portrait of the late Bro. James McBroom and a painting of St Saviour's, The Dobbin, was unfurled in 1964. Lodge officers for 1995 are as follows:

Herb McBroom is the lodge's longest serving member, having been in the lodge over seventy years.
