Orange halls attacked

Police are investigating attacks on three Orange halls in south Down. The halls at Dundrum, Newcastle and Ballywillwill, near Castlewellan were damaged in separate attacks.

The Ballywillwill hall was damaged less than a week after it was re-opened and re-dedicated following a fire which caused severe damage. In this attack a number of items of memorabilia were stolen.

Ulster Unionist councillor Gerry Douglas claimed the attacks were "blatantly sectarian" . "These attacks on the halls were carried out by people who have absolutely no tolerance for the Orange Order or the Protestant culture. "It is a clear attempt to heighten tensions in the run-up to the 12th." Belfast Telegraph 10th July 2002
