Nationalists set fire to Orange Hall at Bryansford

Nationalists tried to burn the Orange Hall at Bryansford in County Down, Northern Ireland, to the ground early on Sunday morning.

Fire officers who were called to the scene spotted smoke coming from the hall and removed roof slates to bring the blaze under control. Damage to the hall, which is undergoing refurbishment, was confined to the porch and the roof.

They placed a tractor tyre on the Orange Hall porch roof and set the tyre alight. Luckily this did not properly ignite and the only damage to the Orange Hall was a scorched roof with broken tiles and some smoke damage, due to the swift action of the fire brigade.

The Bryansford hall, which is at the end of a row of terraced houses as part of the Roden estate, was built for the Orange Order more than 100 years ago by Lord Rodden.

The RUC are appealing for information on the attack.

Once again the nationalists in Northern Ireland have demonstrated their hatred and complete ignorance of another culture different from their own. By these actions they are showing they are incapable of even trying to understand the Protestant tradition and their culture.

In the Belfast Agreement it stated about "Parity of Esteem" and "toleration" are to be shown to other traditions in Northern Ireland both Protestant and all the other ethnic cultures.

Sadly to say the nationalist community are not even trying to understand the Protestant way of life or to learn about the rich and complex culture and traditions we have such as our colourful parades, bonfires, bands etc..

This fact also seems to be lost on whoever controls the Northern Ireland Tourist industry in Northern Ireland as well, as they are only too happy to promote everything regarding the Roman Catholic tradition but there is nothing of the Protestant tradition on sale in the Northern Ireland Tourist Board shops.

Why is this when the Protestant population is greater than the Roman Catholic community in Northern Ireland? Who makes these decisions?

If you feel you can help to promote the Protestant culture in Northern Ireland, please feel free to get in contact with the Northern Ireland Tourist Board and ask why it is impossible to get anything about the Orange Order and memorabilia items for sale in their outlets. It is only with your help that we will succeed on this and other issues concerning the Protestant community.
